Chiropractic care. Who knew two simple word could be controversial? I have learned, however, that the topic can be controversial. It seems like people are either whole-hearted believers or think the whole thing is quackery. I don’t care where you fall on the spectrum, I simply want to share why my family gets adjusted.
First off, a basic course in the thought behind chiropractic care. Protected by our spine, the nerves in our body convey messages to and from the brain. If the spine is out of alignment at all, it can affect the messages and whether or not they are delivered. Much like a garden hose that gets bent and can’t deliver water, a spine that is not in optimal shape can’t function as it’s designed to.
Believers in chiropractic care believe that our bodies are designed to heal themselves, but in order to do so, the brain must be able to communicate properly with the rest of the body. A chiropractor is trained to adjust the spine and get it back into proper alignment.
I haven’t always been a believer, although I am a big fan of holistic wellness (which you can read more about here). But about 8 years ago, my husband was having serious back issues. He couldn’t even stand up straight, and that’s not normal for anyone, much less a young man in his 20’s. My employer at the time referred him to her chiropractor, who slowly began the process of changing the way we thought about chiropractors.
Once my husband’s back problems started improving, and he started learning more about chiropractic care, he became a huge fan. Unfortunately, I was still a skeptic, which was partly because growing up, chiropractors weren’t highly regarded in my family.
I’m embarrassed to say it took me 7 years to start seeing a chiropractor myself. I only went after my mom (who was staunchly opposed) started going and seeing huge changes. Over the past 2 years, chiropractic care has changed my family’s life. That’s not an exaggeration.
A small list of changes:
- My mother is off her blood pressure medication.
- Amazingly, my father in law is off his heart medication.
- My husband no longer has back problems.
- All my kids stay healthy and bounce back faster when they get sick (which isn’t very often).
- Eden, my middle daughter, had uneven hips when we started getting her adjusted. She was constantly falling and clumsy. Now her hips are aligned and she is not clumsy.
It sounds dramatic to credit this all to chiropractors, however, the changes didn’t happen until after we all started getting adjusted on a regular basis.
I think some of my problems in my third pregnancy could have been avoided if I had been seeing a chiropractor. My husband wanted to get our kids adjusted as soon as they were born. I said no because at the time the thought of someone “cracking” my babies necks scared me. (Spoiler alert, that’s actually not what happens at all.) I joke with my husband that we need to have another baby so I can see the difference that would happen during pregnancy and in a baby adjusted from birth.
My girls love to get adjusted. Our office knows and loves our kids, and my girls even invited our chiropractors to their birthday party! When they get hurt, they ask to go get adjusted. They know that if their spine is properly aligned, their body can heal faster. I love that their first instinct is to get adjusted.
If you haven’t ever given chiropractic care a second thought, you should look into it. Find a Maximized Living Office (here is an office locator), and get some information. I promise it will change your life for the better!
