Do any of you eat dairy free? We’ve recently switched to eating mostly dairy free for several reasons. On occasion, we indulge, but we’ve found so many good substitutes that we’re getting better at eating completely dairy free. Switching things over and doing without has been an adjustment, but here are my favorite dairy free products so far!
Sidenote: We’re totally not a vegan or even vegetarian household, but when going dairy free, I’ve learned to look for the vegan options in the store. At any other date, I may mention eating a hamburger or a steak and I don’t want hear anyone accusing me of being a bad vegan/vegetarian!
My favorite dairy free products (so far)
My kiddo that has benefited the most from not eating dairy has done really good with being told “no” in regards to dairy. However, there are times when she will ask for a grilled cheese sandwich, or cheese for her taco. I had found some vegan cheeses at the grocery store, but I didn’t feel good about any of them, as they were full of other junk. A good friend who lives DF suggested that I try Violife, and we have never looked back! Every single person in my family will eat Violife cheese, even my pickiest eater. I call that a win! We can only get it in one store in town (Natural Grocers), so that’s the only downside (Whole Foods may have it, now that I think about it. To be honest, I didn’t look at their vegan cheese last time I was in there.). And it is more expensive than your average cheese (I mean, of course it is)…so there are two downsides. However, if you are looking for a good vegan cheese, give Violife a try.
Forager Project Cashewgurt
Even if you’re not going dairy free, Forager’s Vanilla Cashewgurt is amazing! It tastes very much like Oui French yogurt, though a little less firm as far as consistency goes. We also buy the plain yogurt to substitute for sour cream. On any given evening, my go-to treat has been their vanilla yogurt with some granola on it. A-ma-zing. Never would I ever have guessed that cashews could make such delicious yogurt.
Kitehill Almondmilk Yogurt
Another plain yogurt we use to substitute for sour cream is Kitehill’s Almondmilk yogurt. Actually, as a sour cream sub, my girls prefer this over Forager’s plain yogurt. This one is a little bit thicker in consistency (more like sour cream), so that may be it. Taste-wise, you really can’t tell it’s not dairy.
My mom makes her own almond milk, and while it’s amazing, I haven’t learned how to do it, and honestly…buying it is easier. I really like Califia’s unsweetened almond milk. There are no extra ingredients (aka crap), and I feel good giving it to my kids. Plus the bottle is cool too (I’m a sucker for good packaging!). My girls haven’t switched to drinking almond milk- they just don’t drink any “milk”, but they like this poured into their cereal or oatmeal. I use it as a milk substitute in recipes as well.
There you have it! As I said, we’re only a few months into it, so I’m a total newbie and I welcome any other suggestions you may have. If you try any of the things I recommended, let me know your thoughts!
